Solar camera power planning: start with the load

Last checked 24 October 2026

Before choosing a solar panel or battery for a pan-tilt-zoom camera, ask for a site-specific energy assessment. Give the designer your intended operating pattern and the periods when recording must remain available.

PVsyst describes stand-alone presizing as a rough estimate: it uses monthly solar input with panel orientation and horizon, desired autonomy and an acceptable loss-of-load level. It recommends a detailed simulation with real components after presizing. This is software-method guidance, not a camera performance promise. PVsyst stand-alone presizing documentation.

Prepare an energy brief

Input to supplyEvidence to request
Site and seasonLocation, installation months, panel direction and tilt, and dated photos of shading across the day.
Operating patternMeasured power for standby, recording, live viewing, night illumination and pan/tilt operation; expected time in each mode.
Availability targetThe acceptable interruption level and the period to cover without useful charging.
Battery and charging arrangementUsable energy at the proposed operating conditions, permitted charge/discharge conditions, controller compatibility and the proposed wiring layout.

Compare the assumptions, then the sizes

  • Ask the designer to show the daily energy budget and the month that governs sizing.
  • Request the assumed losses, shading treatment and reserve, rather than accepting an unexplained capacity recommendation.
  • Agree what the camera should do when energy is low: preserve recording, reduce viewing, alert the operator or stop.
  • Define a sample trial with a written operating schedule and logged energy data before accepting a configuration.

Treat every proposed battery duration as conditional on that brief. No operating duration is established for a camera on this page.

Panel labels beside battery labels

Use these printed lines to ask for a configuration, then apply the planning checks above. Panel labels and battery labels do not establish operating time, usable energy, charging performance or matched option pairs.
